Idea Behind Filmify

Smartphones have made photography effortless, but that convenience has changed the way we capture memories. Unlimited storage, endless retakes, and instant previews encourage users to take hundreds of photos they rarely revisit.

  • 57% miss the value and meaning of printed photos

  • 70% rarely, if ever, look at photos stored on their cloud accounts

  • 85% of users aged 18-34 say they take photos primarily for social media sharing

Filmify explores a different approach. Inspired by the experience of analog photography, I designed a mobile app that recreates the anticipation, intentionality, and emotional value of shooting on film while maintaining the convenience of a modern smartphone experience.
Rather than designing another camera app with filters, I focused on changing user behavior through thoughtful product mechanics.

Product Strategy

  • Encouraging Intentional Photography
Introduced limited film rolls to encourage users to think before taking each photo, making every shot feel more deliberate and valuable.

  • Recreating the Film Experience
Designed an analog-inspired camera with selectable camera bodies, film stocks, lenses, and manual controls to make capturing photos feel immersive rather than automated.

  • Building Anticipation
Delayed photo previews through a virtual development process, recreating the excitement and emotional payoff of waiting for film to develop.

  • Organizing Meaningful Memories
Replaced endless camera rolls with curated film albums, making important moments easier to revisit and less likely to get lost among thousands of photos.

  • Supporting Photography Skills
Integrated camera guides and beginner-friendly lessons to help users learn analog photography without leaving the app.

  • Growing the Community
Introduced limited film rolls to encourage users to think before taking each photo, making every shot feel more deliberate and valuable.

What Was Achieved

The project resulted in a complete end-to-end product concept, including user research, personas, user flows, interaction design, and a high-fidelity prototype covering the full photography journey—from camera setup to film development, album management, and community sharing.

More importantly, the project demonstrates how product design can influence user behavior by encouraging intentionality instead of optimizing for speed alone.

Let's Talk

I'm most energized by projects where I can dig into complex problems, collaborate with smart people, and ship things that genuinely improve someone's day.
